What does "low-hanging fruit" mean?

Imagine a tree that is filled with fruit. The low hanging fruit are the easiest to grap and collect. If you are going after the "low-hanging fruit", you are going after the quick wins. However, their quality often isn’t as high as the other fruit on the tree. Often you get a short-term gain by going after low-hanging fruit but don’t sustain as high of a long-term value.
